Summertime and the Listening's Easy

When the 90 or so members of the University City Summer Concert Band get together, it isn't just for lighthearted instrument jokes and conversation -- these volunteers, who range in age and experience, gather to practice and perform with the goal of spreading summertime joy. Isn't that lovely? To hear the results of their hard work and enjoy an upbeat outdoor concert, bring your lawn chair to the plaza at the Market in the Loop (6655 Delmar Boulevard, University City) at 7 p.m. each Tuesday (except July 3). This season's inaugural concert on June 12 features Eagle Squadron, Ballet Parisien, The Good Daughter: Overture, highlights from The Wizard of Oz and more. In addition to the diverse repertoire, expect to see a diverse crowd of neighbors and Loop visitors gathering together to check out the fun. All University City Summer Concert Band performances are free, and the series runs through Tuesday, July 24. Visit www.ucsummerband.org to learn more about the band and see the schedule -- Elvis songs, Rocky & Bullwinkle themes and plenty of patriotism are promised throughout the summer.
