Unless you're a highfalutin celebrity, Academy member or Billy Crystal, landing an invitation to the Oscars is no easy task. Most do it the old-fashioned way, by giving the performance of a lifetime, or writing, directing, or scoring a critically acclaimed motion picture -- but that could take months, maybe even years to accomplish. Today the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra invites you to an Afternoon at the Oscars with a live program of Academy-Award winning film music from the likes of Star Wars, The Godfather, Ben-Hur, Casablanca and many more, backed by behind-the-scenes still photographs from the relevant films. Early arrivals will have an opportunity to capture some behind-the scenes moments of their own, by walking the red carpet and taking their best picture alongside the gold-plated pate of a larger than life Oscar statuette. Your Afternoon at the Oscars begins at 3 p.m. at Powell Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org). Tickets are $30 to $65.
