Thank You for Being a Friend

Ms. Day's appreciation for The Golden Girls dates back to when she was wee and spending Saturday nights at her grandparents' house, where she watched TV and ate Neapolitan ice cream. Those were the days! On these sleepover nights, she would tune in for the saucy Girls and Empty Nest, and she would laugh and laugh. Even back then Betty White's Rose Nylund was her most favorite sitcom character, and catching the show nowadays in reruns reminds Day of why. Rose was grandmotherly and innocent, not bawdy like Dorothy, sharp-tongued like Sophia or sexed up like Blanche, and it pleases Day to no end to see Betty White getting some much-deserved attention recently — and a spot hosting tonight's Saturday Night Live. And Day's not the only one who's excited! Nancy's Place (4510 Manchester Avenue; 314-533-3699 or throws an SNL Betty White Look-Alike Contest & Viewing Party from 10 p.m. to midnight! There's no cover to attend, buckets of beer cost $10, and people are encouraged to dress up like Betty for prizes. Style inspiration may be drawn from The Golden Girls, Mary Tyler Moore, game-show Betty or even something from longer ago — she's had quite a long and successful career, you know. If only we all could be so lucky!
