Michael Perry's Population: 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time is one of the best and most memorable reads we've enjoyed in recent years. It recounts Perry's (mis)adventures among the folks who share his neck of the woods up in small-town Wisconsin. It's a wonderful book, beautifully written by a guy with an unerring gift for crafting honest sentences and translating lived experiences to the page. Perry's brand-new title, Truck: A Love Story, deals with the Big Kahuna: love and all its consequences. The author gives a free reading from Truck tonight at 7 p.m. at Left Bank Books (399 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-6731 or www.left-bank.com), during which you can try a sample from Red Truck Wines — how appropriate.
