Just about a year ago, first-time novelist Ann Leckie
hosted a reading and book-signing at Subterranean Books. The book she was promoting, Ancillary Justice
, went on to win every major science-fiction award in the business before the year was out. Tonight at 7 p.m. Leckie again teams up with Subterranean to launch the sequel, Ancillary Sword
, at the University City Public Library (6701 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-862-6100 or www.subbooks.com
). Her heroine, Breq, formerly a hive-mind consciousness embodied as a massive star ship and now confined only to one body, continues to journey through the vast realm of the Imperial Radch systems in search of answers. There are no guarantees in life -- either the life of sentient spaceships or earthbound authors -- so no one can say if a year from now Ancillary Sword
will also reap a whirlwind of awards and honors. But you have to like Leckie's chances. Admission to the reading is free, but bring your book-buying money.
