The Adventure of Princess Jake

Alex and her husband, Greg, are bound up in a complex web of politics, personal issues and the future of their son, Jake. At four years old Jake is a candidate for some of Manhattan's finest schools, but the competition has placed a great deal of stress on Alex's shoulders. Jake, however, is blissfully unaware of the tempest, and continues to play his favorite games, such as princess dress-up. Is Jake's fluid approach to gender roles the key to making him stand out? Even if it is, how much of it is little-boy experimentation versus actual transgender feelings? Daniel Pearle's A Kid Like Jake takes on the issue of gender dysphoria and how -- and when -- parents deal with a kid who stands out as extraordinary in many ways. A Kid Like Jake opens the Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis' Studio Theatre Series. The play is performed Tuesday through Sunday (October 29 through November 16) in the Emerson Studio Theatre at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road; 314-968-4925 or www.repstl.org).
