The Japanese Scottish Play

Kurosawa at 100, the Webster Film Series' tribute to the great Japanese director, continues to roll on with Throne of Blood, Kurosawa's first stab at reinterpreting Shakespeare. The eerie madness and murder of Macbeth is stripped of monologue and Macduff, focusing instead on the horrible sin of Washizu (Toshiro Mifune) murdering his lord for personal advancement. Driven by paranoia and guilt and swathed in fog, Mifune delivers his usual ferocious intensity as a man being eaten alive by conscience, all in glorious black and white. Throne of Blood screens at 7:30 p.m. at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $5 to $6.
