For much of his life, William S. Burroughs existed on society's fringes. As a gay, drug-using, avant-garde writer, he delighted in being on the outside looking in. But in the last decade or so of his life, Burroughs' cultural influence was finally acknowledged by academia. His books were discussed seriously, his artworks appeared in gallery shows and sold well, and his reputation as a great American artist was solidified.
