The Last Days of William Burroughs

For much of his life, William S. Burroughs existed on society's fringes. As a gay, drug-using, avant-garde writer, he delighted in being on the outside looking in. But in the last decade or so of his life, Burroughs' cultural influence was finally acknowledged by academia. His books were discussed seriously, his artworks appeared in gallery shows and sold well, and his reputation as a great American artist was solidified. Oddly enough, no biography of Burroughs has included this strange final act of his life, until now. Barry Miles' Call Me Burroughs: A Life is the first biography to encompass the entirety of Burroughs' life and legacy. Meticulously researched and packed with never-before-published interviews, Call Me Burroughs paints a complete picture of a life that was too big for most boundaries. Miles will discuss and sign copies of his book at 7 p.m. tonight at Left Bank Books Central West End shop (399 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-6731 or www.left-bank.com). Admission is free.
