The Lure of Desire

Sixty-seven years on and Tennessee Williams still draws a huge audience. The National Theatre's production of A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Benedict Andrews, is the fastest-selling ticket in the Young Vic theater's history. Some of that might be attributed to the casting of Gillian Anderson as Blanche DuBois, the delusional Southern belle, but Williams' lyrical dialogue and realistic characterizations deserve the bulk of the credit. Poor Blanche needs her sister's support, but Stella has her own problems. Her husband, Stanley, is a lusty brute who demands all of Stella's attention, and Blanche's own neediness can only lead to conflict -- but Blanche doesn't deal well with conflict. National Theatre Live presents a prerecorded performance of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire at 7 p.m. at the AMC Chesterfield 14 (3000 Chesterfield Mall; www.fathomevents.com).
