The Muny's Alive

Tastes change over time and audiences are fickle, but Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music continues to be a popular draw no matter where or when it plays. The unlikely romance between stern Captain von Trapp and ebullient young nun Maria is a crowd pleaser — who doesn't love a good "opposites attract" story? — but the real stars of the show are the songs themselves. "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favorite Things" have penetrated to the deepest recesses of pop culture, and that soaring title track begs every audience member to join in. You must resist that urge when at the Muny, however; there's a strict "no sing-along" policy, and for good reason. Let the stars be stars, and simply bask in their warmth. The Sound of Music is performed at 8:15 p.m. Monday through Sunday (July 26 through August 1) at the Muny in Forest Park (314-361-1900 or www.muny.com). Tickets are $9 to $66.
