They Wrote the Book of Love

While an undying love of beer and all things green takes precedence for many on St. Patrick's Day, at the Delmar Loop location of the Craft Alliance (6640 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-1177 or www.craftalliance.org), the love of love itself is on prominent display. Chido Johnson's Let's Talk About Love Baby opens at the gallery on Thursday, March 17, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. and a talk from artist-organizer Johnson scheduled for 6:30 p.m. This exhibition project brings together book arts by artists from around the world and close to home (Ethiopia, France, the United States, even St. Louis), who have used the style of traditional romance novels as a canvas to create individual works showcasing their views on love and their love interests — that is, their love of lines, sculpture, photography, expression. The traveling show/library comes to town just as printmakers from around the world converge on St. Louis for the 2011 SGC International Conference (sgci2011.samfoxschool.wustl.edu), and all are welcome to check out the books individually, but within the confines of the gallery space. Though these works offer more than can be gleaned from a quick glance, treat them like any library's reference works, and please, don't take them out of the building. Let's Talk About Love Baby remains on display at the gallery through Sunday, April 24, and the gallery is open every day except Monday.
