Ben Murphy slaves away at the Consolidated Shirt Factory, and the monotony is numbing his spirit. With a pregnant wife at home he needs the job, but how much more can he take? One night Ben wanders the streets to escape his dreary life and meets a partner in crime with whom he can finally fulfill his "curiosity, courage and the lust for adventure." Tennessee Williams was a young St. Louisan fresh off a debilitating stint at the International Shoe Factory when he wrote Stairs to the Roof. He produced the play himself in 1941 at the St. Louis Artists' Guild, which was then located on Union Boulevard. And now 73 years later, Sudden View Productions stages the play again at the same location, which is now called the Boo Cat Club (812 North Union Boulevard; 314-517-5253 or www.boocatclub.com). Performances take place at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (November 6 through 23); the Thursday, November 13, show takes place at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $30.
