Throw It Down, Big Sam

St. Louis is an all-American city, so we celebrate Independence Day with two fistfuls of patriotism. But rare indeed is the celebration that allows us to flaunt the considerable patriotism of our dogs — until Uncle Sam's Birthday Throwdown. This noon-to-9 p.m. affair in Benton Park (Arsenal Street and Jefferson Avenue; www.bentonparkconcerts.eventbrite.com) features a most patriotic dog contest at 4:15 p.m. — how your dog will demonstrate his love of country is up to you, but a tricornered hat might be a good start. For the lovers, there's a puppy kissing booth, and non-canine events include a petting zoo, pony rides, dunking booth, croquet and horseshoe tournaments, and live music by the Roosevelt High School Marching Band, the Rum Drum Ramblers and the Tommy Halloran Sextet. That's a big day out, but c'mon — this is for America. Admission is free, but some events require cash.
