To He, or Not to He

Shakespeare's melancholy Dane, Prince Hamlet, is one of the iconic male roles. But why does he always have to be a man? For the first show of its 30th season, St. Louis Shakespeare presents the familiar Hamlet in a new fashion: Maggie Wininger stars as Hamlet, which should tease out some unexpected details from the well-known plot. If nothing else, Hamlet's combative and strange relationship with his mother will take on a new air. St. Louis Shakespeare presents Hamlet at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday (July 11 through 20) at the 560 Music Center (560 Trinity Avenue, University City; 314-361-5664 or www.stlshakespeare.org). There is one 7:30 p.m. show on Thursday, July 17. Tickets are $15 to $20.
