Tuesday Nights Sing

Those Tuesday night doldrums are banished, at least for one month, thanks to the Webster Film Series' new weekly series, "I Heart Musicals." A different musical screens every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Moore Auditorium on Webster University's campus (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries), with the inaugural edition showcasing Bob Fosse's version of Kander and Ebb's Cabaret. In the dying days of Weimar Republic Berlin, the Kit Kat Klub is the place to go and be entertained. Sally Bowles (Liza Minelli) is the star of the show, although perhaps the mordantly charming Master of Ceremonies (Joel Grey) might quibble with the billing. Bowles is briefly dazzled by British writer Brian (Michael York), a studious young man who's never had a satisfying affair with a woman. But Sally's showbiz ways don't mesh well with Brian's academia, and the other way around. Additionally, there's all that nasty business with the Nazis, who are inexorably gaining power in the background. Stylish, and with a decidedly noirish bent to the proceedings, Cabaret is a darkly sophisticated musical — the happy ending isn't necessarily part of the program, you see. Admission is $5 to $6.
