Under the Influence of Sugarplums

Larger-than-life toys, an army of mice and dancing candy. It sounds like something from an acid trip, but this strange dream is kid-tested and -approved. The Nutcracker's classic story delights audiences year after year, and the Saint Louis Ballet wants to transport you to the Land of Sweets with its version of Tchaikovksy's most popular ballet at the Touhill Performing Arts Center (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday (December 17 to December 19) and again at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday (December 22 to 23). Even the most cynical adult will be moved watching little kids light up as young Clara's world is transformed into something more magical — no hallucinogenic required. Tickets are $25 to $47.
Wed., Dec. 22; Thu., Dec. 23, 2010
