The damage the War on Drugs has done to poor and insecure communities is undeniable, particularly when examined through ever-rising incarceration rates. Eugene Jarecki's documentary The House I Live In examines the financial and cultural costs from the very bottom of the socioeconomic ladder to the very top. The film provides a portal into the everyday lives of private citizens directly affected by drug culture and shows what happens on the other side of prison bars. Interviewed are incarcerated dealers and their family members, corrections officers, members of Congress and judges. The House I Live In is shown at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Moore Auditorium on Webster University's campus (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Admission is free, but the screening also serves as a fundraiser for AWE, Alternatives With Education, a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring rehabilitation and education back into the Missouri correctional system.
