From its inception in the early 1920s, the Gateway Mall, the eighteen-block downtown park extending from the Old Courthouse to 22nd Street, was intended to become a fully integrated civic park that attracts and retains the imagination of the city at large. Some 75 years of plans have been floated by various mayors and civic groups — the most recent in 2007 — and yet we enter the 21st century with a fully realized and vibrant Gateway Mall still uncompleted. Tonight at 7 p.m., Michael R. Allen presents a comprehensive, illustrated lecture on the history of the Gateway Mall and the various attempts to get it out of park and into overdrive at the Architecture St. Louis HQ (911 Washington Avenue, Suite 170).
