The Adventures of Robin Hood — the 1938 Technicolor epic starring Errol Flynn — remains one of the great all-ages films. Flynn's bravado is compelling, Olivia de Havilland's Maid Marion is winsome, Basil Rathbone is deliciously Rathbone-esque as the evil Guy of Gisbourne, the archery (courtesy of Howard Hill) is incomparable and Erich Korngold's rousing score is one of his best. And then there's all the sword fights and clever banter — it was truly the Star Wars of its time. The heroic flick receives a proper big-screen outing as part of a triple bill at 6 p.m. tonight at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.cinemastlouis.org) courtesy of the St. Louis International Film Festival. First up is Cass Warner's The Brothers Warner, a documentary about the Warner Brothers' ascent from small-time theater owners to media moguls; Robin Hood, the 1912 silent short version that was the first American adaptation of the tale, is screened with live musical accompaniment in the middle, and Adventures provides a suitable big finish to the evening. Admission for all this excitement is a mere $10.
