When people think of Sauget, they don't think of shopping. And they probably don't think of alternative lifestyles, either. The main reason most St. Louisans visit the city just on the other side of the river is if they're drunk — and feel like visiting either Pop's or a strip club.

Jackie Harris knows that, but she had good reason to located her brand-new shop, Sugar & Spice Boutique (1401 Mississippi Avenue #17, Sauget, Illinois), in the Metro East community.

"We hit so many different regulations in so many different communities with these products we carry," she says. "We couldn't do what we wanted. Sauget really didn't care what we do."

And that made it a perfect spot for Harris. The entrepreneur tests computer software for a living but for years enjoyed hosting in-home parties for women wanting to check out sex toy offerings without venturing to shop filled with nudie mags and leering men. Sugar & Spice Boutique is her way of continuing to help women educate themselves about their bodies and sexuality — and to do it in Illinois, where she lives. Its storefront is just seven minutes from downtown St. Louis, but she hopes to tap into a market of customers who might not want to leave Illinois — as well as St. Louis residents looking for something different.

"I have a lot of friends in the LGBT community," Harris says. "They didn't feel comfortable going into some of the stores in St. Louis. And I thought that was a shame. I wanted to rectify that — to give people a place they can go where they feel comfortable. Almost everyone on staff identifies as some type of alternative lifestyle — everyone except me."

The store is a vast 5,900 square feet, and it actually shares a parking lot with the Penthouse club, so visiting St. Louisans may feel right at home. Harris plans to be open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

The grand opening is tonight, October 14. Check out the shop's Facebook page for more information.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story provided the wrong name for the nightclub in Sauget that sits next to Sugar & Spice. It is simply Pop's. We regret the error.
