Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the quirky Austin-based chain that specializes in creative programming and new releases alike, will open its first St. Louis location in Midtown's new City Foundry development.

The ten-screen cinema will offer 942 luxury recliners, along with a bar and restaurant featuring 48 local craft beers on tap, according to a press release from the company. The complex hopes to open by "early 2019," the release said.

"We're excited to become a part of the St. Louis film community at large as well as a part of the vibrant City Foundry STL project," said Alamo Drafthouse founder and CEO Tim League in a press release. "We'll soon be hiring a St. Louis team to bring our mix of blockbusters, indies, foreign films, documentaries and classic movies to the neighborhood."

The growing movie chain was founded in Austin in 1997 and quickly earned raves for its special events for movie lovers and (then-novel) combination of booze and films. Its "35mm changeover projection" abilities allow the company to show even recent releases on actual film, not just digital projection.

"The new location will also present Alamo Drafthouse's signature special events, like Movie Party celebrations of classic favorites (Elf, Princess Bride, Ghostbusters), deep dives into cinephilia, and family-friendly choices like the Kids Camp series that raises money for local schools and nonprofits," the press release promises.

The company says it plans to hire for a host of positions, including a creative manager to oversee programming. Keep an eye on its website for further details.
