Next week, downtown's Citygarden (801 Market Street) is getting its first new permanent sculpture in eight years next week. But you won't want to go looking for it on the park grounds — to see it, you'll need to look up.

Love vs. Money, by Los Angeles artist Kaï, will be installed May 8 on the roof of the restaurant on site at Citygarden, which is currently a Kaldi's Coffee. A plaque identifying the sculpture, a press release says, "will also pay tribute to the late Philip Durham, the former Gateway Board member and prize-winning St. Louis architect who designed the café building where the new sculpture will be sited."

The sculpture — the 27th permanent installation at Citygarden — depicts a fifteen-foot-tall figure in metal and fiberglass. He's a skinny little fellow being weighted down by a bag of money, and pulled in the other direction by a heart balloon. (We couldn't get a rendering, alas, but you can see it online here.)

Love vs. Money joins two other new additions to the urban garden, although those are only here until fall. They're in celebration of Citygarden's tenth year. One, Unzip the Earth, is already in place; details on the other are coming soon.

But all those sculptures, temporary and un-, don't mean the three-acre park is running out of room. Love vs. Money is going on the roof not for a lack of other options, a spokesman tells us, but because it fits the theme and — fittingly for the city's coolest park — it's "just a cool place to put it." Hard to argue with that.
