The Scene: With pillars of displayed wine bottles and sinful red lighting, Copia would fit into the hubbub of any cosmopolitan downtown. But it's in downtown St. Louis, and because of a sparse crowd, this chic and sleek location can look a bit lonely and under-appreciated during Happy Hour. On both the food and wine menus, Copia pays attention to all aspects of the dining experience: presentation, texture and, of course, flavor.
Why You'll Go Back: We were a little unsure just what it meant to be an "urban winery," but Copia has clearly defined the term. Its wine list is extensive and eclectic -- satisfying the taste buds of anyone wanting to enjoy a nice glass of wine. Its food, though strong enough to stand on its own, can only be enhanced with a good wine pairing. It's this attention to both what goes on the plate and in the glass that creates an experience not found at many St. Louis restaurants, and it's this that will draw you back again and again.
The Verdict: Although the atmosphere and tasty offerings are all there at Copia, something seems to be missing during Happy Hour: people. Perhaps it's just a place that lends itself to a nighttime crowd, but we think Copia deserves more attention before the sun sets.
