Are Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup Toxic?

The New York Times Magazine to be published this weekend -- and available now online, though behind the Times' new paywall -- features a long article whose title asks a troubling question: "Is Sugar Toxic?"

The impetus for the article is the work a lecture by Robert Lustig, a University of California, San Francisco, expert on child obesity called "Sugar: The Bitter Truth," which has gained hundreds of thousands of page views. The lecture is embedded here after the jump, though -- fair warning -- it is 90 minutes long.

The gist of Lustig's argument is echoed by the article's author, Gary Taubes:
If Lustig is right, then our excessive consumption of sugar is the primary reason that the numbers of obese and diabetic Americans have skyrocketed in the past 30 years. But his argument implies more than that. If Lustig is right, it would mean that sugar is also the likely dietary cause of several other chronic ailments widely considered to be diseases of Western lifestyles -- heart disease, hypertension and many common cancers among them.
