We Tried: The "Webster Skillet" ($6.75) and French toast ($5.50)
The Verdict: From the outside the Boardwalk Cafe in Webster Groves looks small and unassuming, but do not be fooled. This little neighborhood hole-in-the-wall has some of the heartiest brunch menu items in town, and it serves breakfast all day long. The brunch menu is substantial and varied, offering both sweet and savory items. If dessert for breakfast sounds appealing, order a plate of French toast for only $5.50. You can also choose from other breakfast favorites such as pancakes, English muffins and bagels with cream cheese.
If last night was a little rough and sweet treats are unlikely to agree with your belly, you can check out the omelet options. The fluffy, three-egg omelets come packed with vegetables, meats and cheeses, They're served with toast and home fries, and start around $6.50. If you are feeling slightly more ravenous, a skillet might strike your fancy. Skillets engulf an entire plate with home fries as the foundation, which are then smothered with myriad meats, cheeses and vegetables, and then are topped with two eggs, cooked however you'd like. The mountain of food is more than enough to cover both breakfast and lunch; at less than $7 it's the perfect brunch item.
Next we decided to go with the "Webster Skillet," which includes home fries, mushrooms, spinach, onions, jalapeños, feta cheese and chicken gyro meat. We were very pleased to see that Boardwalk Cafe did not skimp on any ingredients. Each component tastily mingled together yet individually demanded our attention. The meat was beautifully seasoned, the vegetables were cooked to perfection and the cheese provided a much-appreciated balance to the kick of the jalapeños.
Boardwalk Cafe is impressive: We left with very full tummies and relatively full wallets, too. It's cheap, delicious and ideal for a lazy (and, as always, a gluttonous) morning.
