Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault "Jokes" Stir Outrage, Not Food and Drink Sales

Gut Check tries to deal with the inanity of contemporary society through laughter, snark and the well-timed roll of the eyes. Every now and then, however, we see something that causes us to throw up our hands and shout, "What the fuck were you thinking?"

Today, sadly, we've encountered not one, but two of these things.

First, we have the case (via Eater) of a Georgia restaurant called Chops & Hops, which on its Facebook page on Friday advertised a special, the "Black & Bleu" burger, like so:

Get it? A "Black & Bleu" burger because Chris Brown beat the shit out of Rihanna?

The restaurant has since made clear that, unlike Chris Brown, they "DO NOT SUPPORT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE [sic]" and are donating proceeds from the sale of the burger to a support group.

Meanwhile, Jezebel has the story of the ad pictured above, which Belvedere posted on its Facebook page last week.

Where to begin? With a hearty belly laugh? Or with the observation that the only way the photograph and copy make sense in context is if we're meant to view the scene from the man's point of view: "If only I'd gotten this woman drunk out of her mind on smooth, crystal-clear Belvedere vodka, she'd willingly suck my penis, instead of making a horrified face and struggling to get free of my grip, which means I'll have to forcibly sodomize her instead."

Belvedere took the ad down and offered a wishy-washy apology: "We apologize to any of our fans who were offended by our recent tweet. We continue to be an advocate of safe and responsible drinking."
