FRESHfest Celebrates Local Food This Thursday, March 25

When Richelle White started the eco-friendly cleaning service Herb'n Maid, she knew she wanted to bring the message of sustainability beyond home-keeping. "We are evangelists for a sustainable lifestyle," she says. "One of our goals for 2010 is to plan events that allow our clients to engage with similar-minded businesses so that the lifestyle we preach can be made more accessible to them."

Herb'n Maid's first event, FRESHfest, takes place Thursday night at White Flag Projects in the Grove. Beginning at 6:30 guests can sample local-friendly fare from the likes of Onesto, Terrene, Local Harvest Cafe and Catering, Kakao Chocolate, Companion Baking, Five Bistro, Newstead Tower Public House and A Recipe for Wellness.

At 8 the festival will feature a free screening of the film Fresh, which inspired White to create the festival.

"Last fall when I first read about the Fresh film, I saw the potential to put together a double feature, with local food and the documentary sharing equal billing," says White, who paired with her friends Kate Ewing of Animal House Fund and Christy Cunningham-Saylor of Vertegy to make the event happen.

After the screening, participants will have a chance to visit with local farmers, restaurateurs and activists about the the film and its pro-local food message.

In keeping with the eco-friendly core beliefs of White and Herb'n Maid, FRESHfest will be a zero-waste event.AmerenUE Pure Power will offset the event's electricity use with renewable energy credits. Another participant: Replenishing the Earth, a local company that specializes in compostable paper products and green janitorial services.
