Gut Check Does Lunch at the Daily Bread

The Place: The Daily Bread (11719 Manchester Road, Des Peres; 314-909-0010), a bakery-cafe that caters to locavores. (Its motto is "Fresh. Local. Goodness.")

The Lunch: Choose from four different soups, salads served with a freshly baked roll, sandwiches with your choice of a side, and hearth-baked pizzas. And after one glance at the bakery case, you won't be able to pass up dessert.

Although there was a "Daily Double" option, where you can order half of two items, Gut Check sprang for the "Autumn Crunch" salad. We expected a small portion, and were pleasantly surprised by the large size of the salad and fist-sized roll to the side of the plate.

The Verdict: The ingredients were indeed fresh and presumably local. Crisp, Gala apple slices sat atop a bed of crunchy romaine lettuce, chopped walnuts were scattered on top of the apples, and sweet strawberries and white raisins balanced the saltier Gorgonzola cheese. Tomato wedges and balsamic dressing framed the salad.

Of course, we couldn't forget the bread. The promise of freshly baked goods was what originally brought us to the café. Luckily, we were not disappointed. The roll was warm and doughy, and almost outshined the salad.

You might not be a local, but the Daily Bread will still welcome you with open arms. Friendly cashiers, a laid-back atmosphere, and delicious food makes the café the perfect lunch getaway, and for some, a home away from home.
