Café Mochi (3221 South Grand Boulevard, 314-773-5000)
The Hours: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday.
The Deal: Select rolls are half-off, $1 off beers and two-for-one select cocktails.
The Scene: Café Mochi is a hip little place located in the heart of South Grand. The interior is cool and modern, filled with purples and metallics, offering a definite departure from regular South Grand spots.
There are cocktail and beer specials, but the real star of the show is the half-off sushi rolls Café Mochi is known for. Gut Check played it safe by trying the California roll, but then got a little more adventurous with the spicy octopus roll. The presentation of both was fantastic, and they tasted as good as they looked.
Living in a land-locked state, we run the risk of stale-tasting fish every time we go out for seafood, but Café Mochi's rolls tasted fresh and clean. For the hot heads of St. Louis, take note -- the spicy octopus roll was actually rather tame, so be sure to partake heavily in the provided wasabi if you're looking for a kick with your sushi.
Café Mochi has a small selection of bottled beers on special, the Japanese beer Asahi included if you want a more authentic pairing. The restaurant also has a small selection of fun, fruity cocktails if beer isn't your thing. Gut Check tried the Pink Geisha drink, a milky, pink confection that was as impossibly sweet -- and quite delicious.
Why You'll Go Back: While bustling, Café Mochi is never too crowded, and the seating is spread out enough so you don't feel crowded with all the other patrons. Summer is nearly upon us, and the café's outdoor seating lets you enjoy your sushi in the fresh air.
The Verdict: While nothing about Café Mochi is reminiscent of an actual café, (don't come here for coffee), if you come expecting good sushi at a very affordable price, then you will not be disappointed.
