Josh Galliano, Acclaimed Chicago Sommeliers to Open New Restaurant, the Libertine

Acclaimed chef Josh Galliano, already busy setting up the food program at the soon-to-open MX Movies downtown, has yet another project in the works: The former executive chef at the late An American Place and Monarch will head the kitchen at The Libertine, a new venture from Nick and Audra Luedde.

As first reported by Evan Benn of the Post-Dispatch this morning, the Libertine marks a return home for St. Louis native Nick Luedde. Luedde and wife Audra have moved here from Chicago, where he was a sommelier and mixologist, she a sommelier and chef.

According to the press release announcing the Libertine, Nick's honors have included awards as "Best Sommelier" in Chicago and "Best Mixologist-Midwest".

Gut Check has reached out to Luedde for further information. The aforementioned press release offers this description of the Libertine:

The Libertine will provide what many of us love about a neighborhood restaurant, complete with all of the warmth and ease one finds in their favorite local 'everyday' eatery, but true to Libertine sensibilities, will defy convention with fresh & creative cuisine, exemplary drink and impeccable service, all provided in a space that is fun, comfortable, but also stylish and perhaps, even a little bit sexy.

Galliano's menu will feature some thirty items across three categories: meat, vegetable and seafood. Prices will range from $6-$7 for small dishes,12-$22 for large.

Galliano tells Gut Check that while the specifics are still a work-in-progress, his overall approach is ingredient-driven.

"The overarching idea is making it where the food is not pretentious, but accesible and held to a great standard of quality," he says. "[We'll] try to make everything boldly flavored and well executed."

Unsurprisingly, given the Leuddes' backgrounds, the Libterine promises an extensive wine, beer and cocktail program.

The Libertine is slated for a spring location in an as-yet undisclosed location. Stay tuned.
