We learned last week that the old Off the Vine space at 2605 Hampton Avenue in Clifton Heights will become SOHA Bar & Grill. Today we spoke with SOHA's self-described "utility man" -- director of operations, general manager, head barman -- Royce "Rocky" Hazelwood about the new restaurant.

Hazelwood confirms that John McDonald, owner of Nick's Irish Pub (6001 Manchester Avenue; 314-781-7806), owns the property. However, he says McDonald has "put it in his pocket" to guide the direction that SOHA takes.

Of that direction, Hazelwood explains, "I'm looking to be more of a craft gastropub," with classic American bar & grill fare and 31 draft lines. Those draft lines will feature what he terms a "worldly" beer selection, offering craft beers from across the country rather than focusing strictly on the recent boom in area brewers.

"We believe we've got a great neighborhood," Hazelwood says. (Though with a nod to the SOHA name, he adds "We're very aware we're not in the South Hampton neighborhood.")

"I'm really excited about it We're going to put together a great menu."

Look for a soft opening in four to six weeks.
