Two of the three Mosaic Tapas restaurants, downtown (1001 Washington Avenue) and Des Peres (11925 Manchester Road) closed suddenly on September 3. Well, it seemed sudden -- St. Louis magazine reported that owner Claus Schmitz says he lost focus over the past two years.

Mosaic first opened in 2004 at Lucas Avenue and Eleventh Street but moved to Washington Avenue shortly thereafter, where it became a place to see and be seen. Schmitz opened up the west-county outpost in 2011. It had a similar menu, but it also served brunch. His sister, Ellen Schmitz, opened Mosaic Bistro Market in Clayton in 2010, but that transformed into Coastal Bistro & Bar in 2011.

The remaining Mosaic location is at Lambert Airport and will continue to operate under a licensing agreement. Schmitz did not immediately return calls for comment.
