National Agriciulture Week Marked by Local PR Firm

Who's marking National Agriculture Week right now? Farmers, for sure. Companies that cater to farmers, and benefit from them.

But in St. Louis, a public relations firm is also observing the week. Standing Partnership, a communication firm in Chesterfield, is "celebrating the people who produce food, fuel, fiber and feed."

"We work with a number of clients in the agriculture and nutrition industries to help them solve critical and complex communications and marketing challenges, so we thought National Ag Week would be a great time to increase awareness of the importance of agriculture with a broad audience, as well as show our sincere appreciation to those who work within agriculture to feed, fuel and clothe our world every day," said Jessica Hartman, who penned Tuesday's blog post, "A Young Farmer's Perspective on Challenges and Opportunities in Agriculture."

For the entry Hartman interviewed Michael Berry, marketing manager for Specialty Fertilizer Products, who said, "The biggest misconception is the idea that all farms are becoming corporate. Many say that farms are becoming less and less family owned and operated, but the overwhelming majority of farms are still family owned. Family-owned farms are increasing in acreage, but that's because more and more family members are joining the operation. The idea that farms are being completely overtaken by corporate America is false."

The ag business isn't new to Standing Partnership, whose client list is topped by Monsanto. "The writers of the blog posts are members of the Agriculture and Nutrition Team at Standing Partnership, which is comprised of a group of individuals with experience in working with the ag industry as well as a passion for agriculture," said Hartman.

On Monday manager Maya Lunnemann explored the differences between FarmVille and real farming. "While social media has been a great tool to increase the awareness of modern agriculture ... it has also led to a glamorized and oversimplified depiction of farming. I've read countless blog posts and commentaries ... over the past several years on the millions of FarmVille players (and the general public) who lack a true understanding of the time, energy and commitment that farmers dedicate to their chosen profession because of social media phenomena like FarmVille."

Today they'll feature the AgChat Foundation, a social media group for farmers and ranchers. Thursday brings examples of how the agriculture industry is spreading its message via video. Friday, they'll wrap up the week with some suggested Ag Week reading.
