Pick a Peck of Peaches at Eckert's

Jul 15, 2011 at 2:00 pm
This weekend marks the beginning of the peach harvest at Eckert's County Store & Farms (951 South Greenmount Road, Belleville; 618-233-0513). Beginning today, peaches are available from 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. daily at a price of $1.89 per pound.

Tom Dutkanych, Eckert's farm operations manager, says, "This weekend's harvest is Red Havens, primarily."

The Red Haven is a popular, common variety of freestone (i.e., the fruit doesn't cling to its stone) peach.

Though this is the opening weekend for peaches at Eckert's, Dutkanych tells Gut Check there is no need to hurry to be the first in line: "We've got plenty of available."

He adds that there are also blackberries to pick and onions, tomatoes and bell peppers grown on the farm for sale.

For those who are curious, Dutkanych says, "We are not an organic farm," though he notes that many of the pesticides that the farm does use are rated for organic farms.
