After four years in business Six Row Brewing Company (3690 Forest Park Avenue; 314-531-5600) has finally made the jump to cans. Three classic Six Rox brews will be available in cans come mid-May, and head brewer Evan Hiatt tells Gut Check why that's a good thing.

The brews available in cans will be Six Row's most popular: the Whale, a hybrid wheat and pale ale; the Sunshine Slowdown; and the Archnemesis Midnight.

"[The Sunshine Slowdown] is easy drinking. If you technically look at it, it's a cream ale, but nobody knows what that is," Hiatt says. "It's an ale version of a lager -- super light, easy drinking, good for float trips, baseball games, stuff like that."

Hiatt says it seemed like the perfect time to debut cans, both because of the season and the timing for Six Row itself. It has always wanted to put out beer in cars.

"It's really good for the beer. It's a fantastic vessel for beer -- it's impervious to light and takes a lot less resources to cool. People are learning that really good beer comes in a can as well," Hiatt says.

Hiatt says the cans will begin to trickle out onto shelves by May 15. "We're gonna be doing these three initial styles, and if all goes as planned, there are more styles to come," Hiatt says.
