Colorful new graphics adorn the front window of the reopened South Grand Gyro Express.
South Grand Gyro Express (5622 South Grand Boulevard; 314-481-1033) has reopened
after closing "until further notice" last June. Not only has the restaurant returned, so have the original owners,
Kahled and Tamana Nagshbandi. (Khaled came with his family to the United States from Afghanistan via the Soviet Union.)
The menu has changed. In addition to falafel, biryani and kabobs, the restaurant also now offers hot dogs, cheesesteaks and Italian beef sandwiches. Vitally, though,
the gyro sandwich, one of my
100 Favorite Dishes, remains.
