After more than 25 years of serving South County its own spin on frozen treats and custard, Spanky's Frozen Custard (11616 Concord Village Avenue, south St. Louis County; 314-843-9529) has shuttered.

Earlier this year Gut Check named Spanky's one of the five best frozen custard shops in St. Louis.

Rumors of the custard shop's closure have circulated for years, but now signs (and former Spanky's employees) say the space has been sold to a car dealership.

Say it ain't so, Spanky's.

A call to Spanky's yesterday morning found the shop's phone line disconnected. Not a great first sign.

When Gut Check drove by Spanky's early Wednesday morning it was immediately clear that something was up. Normally the shop closes for the season in September or October and its parking lot remains bare throughout the winter, but that's no longer the case. A legion of cars from nearby Frank Leta Acura (11777 Tesson Ferry Road, south St. Louis County; 314-849-4444) now occupy most of its sizable lot.

Peering inside Spanky's interior from its service windows didn't inspire confidence, either. The shop's small interior is completely empty save a refrigerator and sink unit.

If we could procure a Slustard we'd pour one out for Spanky's.

More as we learn it. Additional photos of Spanky's interior and exterior after the jump.
