To many, Irish food is synonymous with potato soup, bangers and mash, and prototypical pub fare. But with St. Patrick's Day just days away, other Irish classics are making an appearance in local restaurants and bakeries. Irish soda bread is one such delicacy. For a taste of this festive bread we looked no further than the Daily Bread (11719 Manchester Road, Des Peres; 314-909-0010), a bakery-café that offers a wide variety of treats with a St. Patrick's Day twist.

Its Irish soda bread is based on a family recipe and is studded with sweet dark currants and caraway seeds. The loaf is dense and round, and the surface is sprinkled with a generous amount of granulated sugar. Despite the sugar and currants, the bread had a decidedly savory taste. Each leavened loaf is made fresh daily in limited batches, and although we bought ours at night, it was still fresh and soft.

Irish soda bread might not be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or the four-leaf clover that brings good luck, but its slightly sweet flavor and complex texture makes it a standout favorite for St. Patrick's Day. In addition to Irish soda bread, the Daily Bread also offers other St. Patrick's Day treats, including hand-decorated, Emerald Isle-inspired sugar cookies, Irish wishing cookies and Irish cream gooey butter cake.
