The New Moon Room's "Sidewinder": Gut Check's Hump-Day Cocktail Suggestion

On Monday night, when we decided to go out for an early Hump-Day drink, a storm was on the horizon, but we chose to tempt fate anyway. We jetted up to the top of the Moonrise Hotel to check out the recently opened New Moon Room (6177 Delmar Boulevard; 314-721-1111) and snag a cocktail at the bar.

Bartender Tony Saputo (who, incidentally, has already been interviewed for this column when he was downstairs at Eclipse) made us a Sidewinder, which is the same drink we fell in love with at the New Moon Room media preview event. We gathered our drink and stepped out onto the open roof to enjoy the cool night air.

The relaxing evening did not exactly go as planned.

Within minutes of sitting down, the wind picked up, and the temperature dropped about fifteen degrees. We moved inside next to the floor-to-ceiling windows where we could continue to enjoy the view but wouldn't end up drinking our hair thanks to the wind. A soft rain began to fall, and we thought it was a lovely night for a spring shower. We stepped up to the bar for a refill, and by the time we sat back down, the rain was coming down in sheets. The wind began to howl and shake the windows, and the patio furniture blew to one corner where it piled up like shiny metal leaves whipped into a crevice. Lightning flashed around the giant rotating model of the moon until finally the rain came down so hard that the moon was no longer visible.

Eventually, everyone at the New Moon Room moved away from the windows and into the hallway, where we could watch the action from an open door without worrying about something flying through a window. It was sometimes terrifying and sometimes awesome, but sipping a drink at the New Moon Room never fails to be exciting.

So today, go celebrate the end of half the workweek by heading up to the space-themed bar and sipping a grapefruit and tequila Sidewinder. There's no major storm in the forecast, but we guarantee the stars will be out and the drinks will be cold and refreshing.

Editor's note: Wednesday. Hump Day. Congrats, you've made it halfway through the work week! Unfortunately, you still have two days to go.

Dunno about you, but in order to survive the midweek blues, we're going to need a drink. Which brings us to our Wednesday Gut Check feature: "Gut Check's Hump-Day Cocktail Suggestion."

Each week we take you to one of our favorite St. Louis bars (and, oh, the list is long) for a drink (or two) we -- in consultation with the bartender -- highly recommend.
