Winslow’s Home (7
213 Delmar Boulevard, 314-725-7559) is part bakery, part restaurant, part general store, with a focus on farm-to-table foods and a menu that’s updated seasonally. Its family-style tables are surrounded by walls of shelves showcasing merchandise from quirky birthday cards to cooking utensils. Winslow’s Home has been thriving in University City since 2008, but how does it stack up for our "picky" (vegetarian, gluten-free, paleo and young) friends?

Winslow's is an order-at-the-counter joint.
Vegetarian: Winslow’s Home does the lovely service of marking vegetarian items on their menu with a leaf symbol. For breakfast options, there’s an egg sandwich, buttermilk pancakes, a breakfast burrito, oatmeal and of course, the trendy avocado toast. For lunch and dinner, there’s a torta rustica with portobello, spinach and feta in a pastry crust, or a Mediterranean falafel wrap.
Gluten-Free: Winslow’s offers gluten-free bread for its sandwiches for an additional $1.50. GF-friendly breakfasts include the smoked salmon hash minus crackers and corned beef hash sandwich on gluten-free bread. The sandwich options (so long as you order that gluten-free bread) include beef brisket, roasted pork, a burger, a turkey burger, a fish sandwich and a grilled cheese. All three salads are gluten-free as well, though you’ll need to ask for the kale salad without croutons. Heads up: avoid the French fries, they are fried with other gluten-full items.
Paleo: For breakfast, your best bet is the smoked salmon hash minus crackers, or their “basic breakfast” (eggs, potatoes, bacon or sausage) minus the toast or biscuit. For lunch and dinner, there’s a superfood slaw salad, or you could order any of the sandwiches (brisket, pork, burger, turkey burger, cod) sans bun and cheese.
Kids: For breakfast, there are kid-size pancakes, milk and fruit. For lunch and dinner, small folks can order a grilled cheese or peanut butter and jelly with a side of milk and a cookie. And if your kid isn't behaving, there's surely a new toy or book on Winslow's shelves that will hold their interest through lunch.
