The Single Greatest Pre-Snowfall Grocery Store Purchase Ever

Snowpocalypse 2011. Supermarket parking lots packed. Shelves of bread, milk and toilet paper emptied. Shovels at the ready to dig out from A MEASLY THREE OR SO INCHES.

At any rate, the mild chaos precipitated* by the impending storm reminded me of the greatest pre-snowfall grocery store purchase ever.

Several years ago, some friends and I planned a long weekend in lovely Galena, Illinois. Snow was in the forecast. We stopped at a grocery store en route to stock up on comfort food, snacks and booze. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Ahead of us in the checkout line were two couples. Their provisions for the weekend's snow?

A bottle of crème de menthe and a box of condoms.

Forget the milk, bread, eggs routine. Love -- or a mutually consenting approximation thereof -- is all you need.
