The weekend never seems long enough, but there's still plenty of time to try a new restaurant or rediscover an old favorite. In Three for Three, I offer three recommendations from the places I've visited in recent weeks.
Pickles Deli (22 North Euclid Street) You can build your own sandwich from the amply stocked case at this charming new Central West End deli, or you can choose from the appealing menu. The hot pastrami on marble rye is excellent.
Fortel's Pizza Den (Multiple locations) I've avoided this place like the plague ever since I had a bad Imo's experience a few days after I moved to St. Louis. That's my loss: Though Fortel's crust is cracker thin, and the slices are squares (except for the corners, of course), the cheese is NOT Provel. Does the pizza still qualify as St. Louis-style? I don't know, but I like it.
Pueblo Nuevo (7401 North Lindbergh Boulevard, Hazlewood) A very good Mexican restaurant, whether you prefer familiar dishes or slightly more exotic fare like the goat stew birria. Chilaquiles in green sauce is delicious -- and devilishly hot.
That's it for this week. Next week: The Best of St. Louis 2008 is still nine months away, but we have an early contender for Best New Restaurant.
Have a great weekend. Eat something good.
