Gut Check's call for nominations for St. Louis' most underrated pizza prompted a flood of suggestions. Using a patented and utterly arbitrary system, we narrowed these down to a field of seven semifinalists -- though, again, we've included a write-in option. The top three vote-getters move onto the finals.
The Semifinalists
Brickhouse Pizza Company (12249 Natural Bridge Road, Bridgeton; 314-291-4000)
jcthelilly: I would like to also mention Brickhouse Pizza located inside Kingpin Lanes in Bridgeton. Off the beaten path? Yes. Worth the trip? Yes. The pizza is amazing, people are friendly and who doesn't like hanging out in a bowling alley? If not the most underrated, it at least needs to be on your radar.
Elicia's Pizza (multiple locations)
jcthelilly: Underrated you say? Not my favorite, as STL has many pizza hotspots, but Elicia's Pizza makes a damn good pie. Taste, toppings, crust, price, convenience, delivery options...all the things needed in a good solid pizza joint.
Monte Bello Pizzeria (3662 Weber Road; 314-638-8861)
Catherine Betz: Monte Bello Pizzeria in South City. It is in a basement and it is so good.
Peel Wood Fired Pizza (921 South Arbor Vitae, Edwardsville, Illinois; 618-659-8561)
anseleye: ...Peel has the best pizza I've had in the area, hands down. Wood fired in a traditional 800 degree wood burning pizza oven, fresh ingredients, recipes both traditional and modernized, they have it all. Now, if they'd just open a location in the city of St. Louis I'd be eating there three times a week minimum. It is DIVINE.
Page through for the rest of the semifinalists and to vote!
