A fire this weekend destroyed the home of Jackie Phillips, owner of
Yummies Soul Food Café. Phillips, her husband and their five children didn't suffer any serious injuries, but an employee at Yummies says the family lost "everything." Both Yummies and
Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 1444 South Compton Avenue are accepting donations to help the Phillips family. For those who might have clothing to donate, I'm working to get the ages and size ranges of the children. I'll update with more information as I have it.
Update: (Wednesday, 12.22, 2:25 p.m.) I just spoke with Lorna Brown-Miller, the social services director at Mt. Zion. She tells me that Phillips is back at work at Yummies. She and her family are in temporary accomodations; their house faces a gut rehab. Brown-Miller says Phillips understands that Christmas is a tough time to ask for help, but "whatever is possible, they'll humbly accept." For those who might be able to donate clothing, the family's sizes are after the jump. For more info, you can contact Brown-Miller at Mt. Zion at 314-776-3888.
