2009 in Review: May

It was the month of Kristen! My colleague Kristen Hinman won three prestigious journalism awards for her stellar feature about Missouri hog farmer Russ Kremer, "The Pope of Pork": a James Beard Foundation award, an Associaton of Alternative Newsweeklies award and an Association of Food Journalists award. Gerard Craft of Niche, one of five finalists for the James Beard Foundation "Best Chef - Midwest" award, loses to a Minneapolis chef....Ozzie vs. Albert in the Cardinals sports bar battle....Terrene hires Brian Hardesty as its new executive chef....St. Louis gets its first El Pollo Loco, a fast-food chain founded in Mexico....Five closes its original location to move to the Hill....Upscale comfort-food restaurant Revival closes after a relatively short run....Gut Check favorite McLozzi Deli also shuts its doors....Local Tex-Mex favorite Chuy Arzola's reopens in new digs....Pappy's Smokehouse is invited to a party in the Big Apple.
