Fact: Intermittently interesting pop megastar Lady Gaga wore a dress made out of meat at MTV's Orgy of Irrelevance Video Music Awards. The blogosphere observed, snarked and was prepared to move on.

Shockingly, not everyone wanted to let the matter drop.

First, we have PETA, which issued a statement because that's what PETA does when it's not sending naked women to shower in public. From TMZ, via Gawker:
But the [PETA] rep notes that if the dress was made from actual meat -- and not the fake stuff -- it wouldn't take long to go sour ... saying, "After time spent under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling in maggots."
Meanwhile, the New York Daily News (also via Gawker) contacted a butcher to discuss the quality of the meat in the dress. He was not impressed:
"There are no expensive cuts here, no real steaks," [butcher Peter Cacioppo] said. "The best you've got is the flank steak on top of her head."

His nephew, who works with him behind one of the city's top meat counters, said about 25 pounds of meat went into the carnivore couture.

"It's the cheaper end cuts -- not including her. You got about $100 of meat there," said Mark Cacioppo, 30, of Queens.
Then again, maybe this is all further evidence of Lady Gaga's power. I don't see anyone else uniting PETA and butchers in scorn.
