#43: Chori Pollo at Mi Ranchito

One benefit to this being a collection of my favorite dishes rather than a ranking of St. Louis' "best" dishes is that it gives me the chance to enrage the Cheez Whiz-averse to lavish some attention on restaurants to which I have a sentimental attachment.

Mi Ranchito in University City is one of these.

A few years ago, when both my wife and I worked at the RFT, the two of us and a few of our colleagues made a habit out of Friday lunch at Mi Ranchito. These weren't anything special, just your typical lunch-with-coworkers, shop talk and bitching with a side order of cheese dip.

My go-to dish -- actually, the go-to dish for several of us -- was the chori pollo: a boneless chicken breast topped with chorizo and melted cheese. The chicken is ballast, a vehicle for the tangy cheese and sharply spiced chorizo. Wrapped up in a soft flour tortilla, chori pollo makes for a satisfying ad hoc taco.

The chori pollo is served with three flour tortillas, rice and lettuce topped with a dollop of guacamole. Sadly, colleagues eager to bitch for an hour or two aren't included.
