Yes, They Had Some Bananas Today

Posted By on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 10:00 AM

gostlouis.com reps are giving out free bananas at the corner of New Ballas and Olive. Huh?less than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Tweeter Kathy Lovett elaborates. "I was in the northbound #98 bus, crossing Olive, when I saw the banana giveaway. The givers wore reflective vests and looked chilly; too bad the weather wasn't more agreeable. I couldn't discern if they had much success finding banana-takers, though the sidewalk-stationed sandwich signs might have helped."

It wasn't just in Creve Couer. GO! St. Louis, the organization that hosts the St. Louis Marathon and promotes healthy living, passed out free bananas to commuters during morning rush hour at six locations in Creve Couer, Clayton, and St. Louis City.

"The GO! Bananas promotion was designed to encourage area residents to make fruit, and in this case bananas, part of their daily diet," said Nancy Lieberman, GO! St. Louis president, in a press release. "The general public is more familiar with the high quality events and programs we present year-round, which center on increasing their fitness levels, so we wanted to introduce a new component that brought some much-needed awareness to proper nutrition."

The group distributed 4,500 free bananas in their one-time "Gorilla Marketing" (their term) effort. The bananas bore stickers with a message reminding St. Louisans to eat healthy.

It's certainly better than those guys who sell giant Pixie Sticks from busy medians.
