Beer and Pretzel Caramels from The Caramel House

Shoppers who want to purchase "Made in the USA" goods have to watch not just the origin of the finished product, but the components as well. The blue jeans may be sewn in California, but where was the denim fabric manufactured? Where did the cotton for the denim grow? When Janet Shulman of the Caramel House promises that her beer and pretzel caramels are "hand-crafted in St. Louis, Missouri," she means it.

The ingredients list not simply "beer and pretzels" but "Schlafly beer" and "Gus' pretzels." Chunks of crunchy pretzels stud each caramel, with a healthy sprinkle of pretzel salt visible on each piece.

The beer flavor wasn't terribly pronounced in the first piece, so Gut Check unwrapped the waxed paper from the other two pieces in the three-piece bag ($3.99), and ate them as well -- just to be sure of our initial judgment. Still no beer flavor, but delicious and very fresh nonetheless.
