Hiro, a sushi and izakaya restaurant from 609 Lounge owner Bernie Lee, looks just about ready to debut at 609 Eastgate Avenue. It might have opened already, but calls this morning just before its posted lunch hours went unanswered.

The address was previously the home of Blue Ocean Sushi, which relocated in May to 6355 Delmar Boulevard (itself the former home of another sushi restaurant, Seki.)

Hiro's sushi menu includes the expected nigiri sushi, sashimi and rolls as well as rolls of the restaurant's own creation, like the "Hiro" (tempura crawfish and avocado inside, topped with beef carpaccio, jalapeño, sea salt and truffle oil) and the somewhat terrifyingly named "Mommy Dearest" (a California roll topped with baked scallops).

Izakaya is a cuisine most easily understood as Japenese bar snacks, and Hiro's izakaya menu includes such dishes as "Smoked Salmon Rangoon" and "Kakuni Buns" with braised pork belly.

Hiro is the second restaurant featuring izakaya to open in recent months, after Izakaya Ren (2948 Dougherty Ferry Road, Kirkwood; 636-825-3737).

According to its website, Hiro is open for lunch 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday and for dinner 5-9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call 314-721-9168 for more info.
